Friday Night SmackDown Results for 4/2/2010

On the first SmackDown after WrestleMania, a new World Heavyweight Champion was crowned, and the title change was a rather "Raw" deal.

Jack Swagger def. World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho (Title Match)
Chris Jericho walked into the SmackDown ring proud, and so he should've been. He had defeated the returning Edge to retain his World Heavyweight Championship at the Grandest Stage of Them All, just as he said he would. He proved that he truly is the best in the world at what he does. Edge, however, wasn't about to sit back and allow the artist formerly known as "Y2J" sit and run his mouth. He came out to the ring and sent a message to the champion, blasting him with a Spear. That, along with the injuries sustained by Jericho at Wrestlemania at the hands of Edge, smelled like blood in the water... or, money in the bank. How appropriate, as Mr. Money in the Bank himself, Jack Swagger, immediately came out to take advantage. After knocking Edge down with the briefcase, he cashed in his WrestleMania reward and called for a referee. One Gutwrench Powerbomb was all it took for Swagger to turn money into gold. And in 8 seconds, a new World Heavyweight Champion was crowned. From here on out for the rest of the night, the crowd, as well as everyone on the roster, was made well aware of the changing of the guard.

John Morrison & R-Truth def. Cryme Tyme
After losing at WrestleMania to the Unified Tag Team Champions ShoMiz, Morrison and Truth were in need of some momentum rebuilding. They found it in the form of a dominating victory over Cryme Tyme. Morrison pinned Shad, who never got to make a tag, after Starship Pain in a match that you would've probably missed had you blinked. After the match, Shad shocked the Las Vegas crowd and turned on his partner JTG in a fit of frustration. When asked about his actions soon after, Shad claimed there was no more Cryme Tyme. It is now simply "My Time."

Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre vs. Matt Hardy (No Contest)
The "Chosen One" was set to face Matt Hardy on SmackDown, but before the match could begin, McIntyre attacked Hardy and left him incapacitated. The referee had no choice but to throw out the match, but the Intercontinental Champion no doubt sent his message.

Dolph Ziggler def. The Great Khali via submission
We have seen these two compete in the past, and just as he did last year, Dolph Ziggler found a way to defeat the giant Superstar via the Sleeper Hold. After the match, Khali took the microphone and stated that he was taking an indefinite hiatus. However, he would be back sometime in the future to attempt to reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship he once held in the past.

CM Punk then came out to the ring with the Straight Edge Society. An irate Punk stated that he wants a rematch against Mysterio, in another attempt to save Mysterio and show him the light of Straight Edge. This time however, Punk is willing to put a piece of himself on the line. If Mysterio accepts and defeats Punk again, Punk will shave his hair. Punk claims that he cares about Rey that much, that he would sacrifice a piece of himself to save Mysterio.

Beth Phoenix & Tiffany def. Women's Champion Michelle McCool & Layla
Beth Phoenix wants the Women's title. Tiffany wants to make an impact on SmackDown. Both Divas took a large leap towards their goals with a victory against the Women's Champion and her BFF Layla. However, with SmackDown's official consultant Vickie Guerrero in the pocket of the champion, is there anything The Glamazon and the former ECW General Manager can do to make their mark on Friday Nights?

Kane def. The NXT Rookies via DQ
Kane is "bored and frustrated". When he gets in this mood, he needs to take it out on someone. Tonight, he took it out on not one, but EIGHT people. EIGHT NXT Rookies to be exact. After running roughshod through the whole NXT roster in an 8-on-1 Elimination Tag Team Match, the Rookies regrouped, and at the lead of David Otunga, attacked Kane from all sides, bringing the monster down. As they celebrated, however, the Big Red Machine sat up, and chased the Rookies out of the building. Although they lost by DQ, they certainly sent a strong message.

Jack Swagger's "State of the Championship Address"
Jack Swagger had shoved it down the throats of the entire SmackDown roster that we was the champion. And now, it was the WWE Universe's turn to hear it. However, he was interrupted by Chris Jericho. Jericho, irate and upset, demanded that Swagger return "his" championship. Edge then came out, making it known that HE wants a shot at the newly minted World Champion, since if it wasn't for him attacking Jericho, Swagger probably wouldn't be champion. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long came out and said that since Jericho wants his title back, but won't take his given rematch against Swagger, AND since Edge would like to take that rematch, but isn't entitled to a match to begin with, we are going to see Edge vs. Chris Jericho next week to determine the No. 1 contender to the World Title. To end the night in a proper air of chaos, Edge spears Jericho AGAIN, and Swagger delivers a Gutwrench Powerbomb to both challengers.
