| | | Dating back to 1963, the prestigious WWE Championship has been held by the greatest of in-ring competitors from "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers and Bruno Sammartino, to Hulk Hogan and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. In recent years it has been held by the likes of Triple H, Randy Orton, John Cena, and Edge.

Rather, the U.S. Championship got its roots in WCW. Many of wrestling's greatest names have staked claim to the U.S. Championship during the title's early years, and it quickly became one of wrestling's most prestigious titles. In the late 1990s, the U.S. Championship lost some of its value due to it being constantly vacated. Since 2003, however, it has resided in WWE and has been held by many greats including John Cena, Eddie Guerrero, and Booker T.

Melina made an attempt to bring the Women's title to the blue brand in 2005, but SmackDown never saw women's championship gold. Finally, in 2008, then-SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero sanctioned a new title for the Divas on SmackDown. Michelle McCool was the first to hold the new championship, and since then, multiple Divas after her have "netted the butterfly" so to speak.

Then-Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff created the World Heavyweight Championship and hand-picked Triple H to be the first champion. A spin-off of the old WCW Championship, the World Heavyweight title has been held by some of the biggest names in WWE, already becoming a prestigious World Title in the same right as the WWE Championship. In the short history of its existence, it's been held by Triple H, Batista, The Undertaker, and many more.

Since its inception in September 1979, many greats have captured the Intercontinental Championship, including Hall of Famers Pat Patterson, Don Muraco, Tito Santana and Greg Valentine. Additionally, many of today's top Superstars have enjoyed reigns as Intercontinental Champion, including Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton, Chris Jericho and Triple H.

The championship has had many great owners, including first-ever champion Fabulous Moolah, who held it for almost 30 years, and Trish Stratus, who holds the record with 7 title reigns and retired with the gold in her hand.

In 2002, after the Brand Extension, it was on the SmackDown brand for a short time before being made a Raw-sanctioned championship. In 2009, it was unified with SmackDown's WWE Tag Team Championship and became one half of the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship.

After finally being decided in a tournament to crown the first champions, it was defended on SmackDown until 2009, when it was unified with the World Tag Team Championship at The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania to create the new Unified WWE Tag Team Championship.
| 0 | 0 | | | At the 25th Anniversary of Wrestlemania, the WWE Tag Team Champions and the World Tag Team Champions faced each other in a match with one stipulation: That the winners will hold both championships and defend them as one. Today, they are now known collectively as the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship. Although neither individual title has been retired, their lineages are from here on merged, and the two tag team championships are recognized, held, and defended as one.

In 2001, it was brought to WWE in the Invasion and replaced the WWE Light Heavyweight Championship soon after. Since then, it was defended on SmackDown until 2007, when the belt was deactivated and WWE's once-great Cruiserweight Division declined.

It wasn't defended in the United States often until Shawn Michaels won it from The British Bulldog at One Night Only in Birmingham, England. From then on, it was defended in U.S. soil as well as anywhere else. It was temporarily deactivated in 1999 when Shane McMahon won the championship. It was brought back only two months later. It was finally retired in 2002 when Intercontinental Champion Rob Van Dam defeated European Champion Jeff Hardy to unify the titles.

The rules of how to defend the championship even evolved with time, and it was eventually defended under 24/7 rules. That meant that the Hardcore Champion could be pinned at any time, any place, as long as a referee was around to make the three-count. With this 24/7 rule, the championship saw more title holders in its 5-year history than some titles ever see.
