 | The original tag team championship of the WWE since 1971, it is one of the most historic and prestigious prizes in tag team wrestling. In 2002, after the Brand Extension, it was on the SmackDown brand for a short time before being made a Raw-sanctioned championship. In 2009, it was unified with SmackDown's WWE Tag Team Championship and became one half of the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship.

After finally being decided in a tournament to crown the first champions, it was defended on SmackDown until 2009, when it was unified with the World Tag Team Championship at The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania to create the new Unified WWE Tag Team Championship.
